Randy Franklin: Singer-Songwriter

When you think of the long time pillars of the Charlotte, NC music scene, you may think of bands like The Spongetones, Antiseen, or Doubting Thomas. But hanging around, playing in the background for just as many years is Randy Franklin.

Randy is a native Charlottean who grew up in the 1970s, when Charlotte was a much different town. Getting his first guitar for Christmas at the wee age of 6, Randy began playing in earnest, and as a high school student, began jamming with local bands and performing solo throughout the Charlotte area.

Teaming with Gina Stewart (Blind Dates, Doubting Thomas, Volatile Baby) in the early 80s, the pair toured the bars and clubs of the Carolinas, playing honky-tonk country rock and original tunes. In the latter part of the decade, Randy formed the Providence Drive Band; a bluegrass meets high energy rock-n-roll. With Ed Leitch (Halifax) on lead guitar, and Randy on guitar and banjo, the foundation was laid of what would eventually morph into Crisis, the band Randy has led for the past decade.

Crisis has released 5 critically acclaimed CD’s since 1998, and has received radio airplay and record sales from Sweden to Japan. As the band’s primary songwriter, Randy forged the crunchy pop, unmistakable sound of Crisis.

When Randy is not touring with Crisis, he still enjoys performing solo shows, spotlighting his prolific song writing, as well as spot on renditions of classic rock cover tunes.
